While scientific advancements in cancer research are accelerating, the EU Cancer Mission’s focus remains on ensuring these breakthroughs translate into real-world impact, including in improving the long-term quality of life for survivors.

MAYA Project Coordinator Prof. Dimitrios Fotiadis participated in the 5th Workshop of the EU Cancer Mission Dialogue with AYA Cancer Survivors, organised by the European Commission in Brussels and online. It gathered 65 participants, including cancer patients and survivors, caregivers, patient advocates, project representative and policy makers. The workshop emphasised the EU Cancer Mission's commitment to co-creation with survivors, with over €600 million invested since 2021, and nearly €150 million allocated specifically to youth cancer research and survivorship initiatives.

Prof. Dimitrios Fotiadis presented MAYA during the session "Presentations of ongoing projects selected under the 2024 Cancer Mission call to improve the understanding and management of late-effects in AYA patients", showcasing our innovative approach to reducing cardiotoxicity in AYA survivors through smart mirror technology and personalised lifestyle interventions. In line with a core principle of the EU Cancer Mission, the MAYA project uses a co-research approach, where cancer survivors are not just participants but active members of the research team. By involving survivors at every stage, the project ensures their lived experiences guide and enrich the work. Their unique perspectives bring deeper insight into the challenges and needs of people affected by cancer, leading to more meaningful and impactful outcomes.

The workshop was part of a long-term engagement with AYA cancer survivors launched in 2023, aimed at fostering dialogue and co-developing solutions for the ongoing challenges faced by this group in managing and living with and beyond cancer. The workshop reviewed progress since 2023, with particular attention on the research and innovation outcomes and other key initiatives that directly benefit AYA cancer survivors.
