After cancer treatment, many people are able to return to their normal lives. However, some treatment effects can emerge over time, making ongoing attention to health an important part of long-term wellbeing.
Regular check-ups and healthy lifestyle choices can help reduce these risks and support lasting health. This highlights the value of accessible information and practical guidance tailored to people who have experienced cancer.
Heart-related side effects are among the more common long-term effects of cancer treatment. With appropriate monitoring and support, these risks can be identified early and managed effectively, helping survivors stay healthy and active.
MAYA (smart Mirrors to support healthier lives of Adolescents and Young Adults after cancer) is a four-year project that aims to empower AYA cancer survivors to manage their cardiovascular health and lifestyle with the support of innovative digital tools specifically designed to address cardiotoxic-related late effects of cancer treatment, from the convenience of their homes.
By focusing on manageable risk factors such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight, the project aims to significantly lower the risk of serious heart problems while enhancing overall wellbeing and quality of life. MAYA’s approach is centred on empowerment, prevention, and ongoing support, helping survivors live healthy, active lives after cancer.
MAYA places AYA cancer survivors at the heart of its activities, engaging them as co-creators alongside healthcare providers and caregivers. Through this participatory approach, the project captures concrete, experience-based insights that inform a deeper understanding of the unique needs, risks, and concerns associated with digital interventions for managing cancer late effects. These insights guide the practical implementation, user engagement, and ethical development of digital health tools, allowing MAYA to iteratively refine its solutions for wider societal benefit.
MAYA recruited 5 co-researchers to support the overall project development and implementation, ensuring patient-centred approaches.
Living Labs are unique testing environments where researchers, companies, organisations, and citizens work together to co-create, test, and validate new solutions in practice.
The MAYA project is creating Living Labs across several of our partners’ locations to support the testing and validation of innovative screening methods.
The Living Labs will foster awareness and build capacity within different health and care settings to ensure new tools and methods are smoothly integrated into clinical practice.
